Sansui 8080 Receiver Repair And Restoration

This Sansui 8080 receiver was found in a Florida attic. Not the best place to store your electronics.

The Sansui 8080 is in pretty rough cosmetic shape but is worth saving.

I have removed the top cover. Just two screws on each side of the case gets you in. It's dusty and should be cleaned up some.

The picture below shows that the grime is pretty thick in spots.

I've taken this Sansui 8080 receiver outside to clean it up. The garbage can makes a good table for this job.

I'll use some compressed air along with a paint brush to clean the chassis up some.

After cleaning up the chassis some the Sansui 8080 is back inside and I have removed the bottom cover.

There is always a lot of cleaning to do with any vintage stereo restoration or repair. This Sansui 8080 is no exception.

I have removed the front faceplate for cleaning with soap and water. I will also be able to get to the controls for cleaning with deoxit.

You can not properly clean the pots and switches properly with deoxit without some disassembly of this Sansui 8080 receiver.

Working my way down the Sansui 8080 I now have the bass, mid and treble pots where I can get the deoxit to them.

With the controls in this position you are able to get the deoxit where you want it and not all over the inside of the chassis.

I'll do a quick check to make sure that the Sansui 8080 is still operating after cleaning the controls and reinstalling them.

I'll use soap and water along with a toothbrush to clean the front panel knobs. Don't tell my other half about using the good dishes.

The picture below shows the difference between a dirty knob and a cleaned up one.

Do you want the radio dial to light when you select any input? As designed the 8080 shuts off the lamps to the radio dial when AM or FM is not selected.

The picture below shows 4 connectors that are seen at the right center of the chassis when looking down into the unit when the top cover is removed.

You want the connector(second from the right) that has an orange, gray, black, and red wire.

Remove the red wire. If you push on the pin from the connector side with a pick or small screwdriver while pushing, the pin will come out.

Now move the red wire to the previously un-used spot on the connector. Your modified connector should look like the picture below.

Now you will have full lighting for all of the inputs on your Sansui 8080 receiver. The picture below shows the AUX input selected.

It's time now to check the bias and DC offset on this receiver. Always have the Sansui 8080 service manual available for reference.

The bias and offset pots are easy to get at in the Sansui 8080. Remove two screws in the cover and the pots are right there.

The service manual will also give you specifications as well as where to make any needed adjustments.

I'll use a sound technology 3200A to measure power output and distortion. This Sansui 8080 did well on the test bench.

This receiver will never win any beauty awards but it's ready to start it's next 40 years. This Sansui 8080 repair and restoration is complete.
